Who are The Lions?

Lions Clubs are an international network of men and women who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities across the world.

Lions are;

  • Members of the world's largest and most active service club organisation.
  • Men and women who believe that by working together they will accomplish far more than would be possible as individuals.
  • Members committed to solving worldwide health and social problems, and who realise that solutions are possible when every Lions Club participates.
  • People who cherish the fellowship of their own Club, but who also feel a close kinship with Lions in over 200 countries throughout the world.
  • Individuals dedicated to maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards in their Club – and in their personal lives.
  • People who are serious about their commitment to humanitarian service, but have fun along the way.

We cover all costs from our own dues, ensuring that all donated funds go to the causes. Transparency and accountability operate at every level; in fact, The Financial Times has ranked Lions Clubs International Foundation the "best among non-government organisations worldwide with which to work".

We are proud that our organisation is close to a century old, and that it has a distinguished history of doing good works for the world. Local communities respect and trust their clubs, both because those clubs are made up of neighbours and friends who have a long record of support, and because of the Lions Clubs International name and legacy.

We have fun in our clubs. And when we meet fellow Lions for the first time, we treat them like old friends.

When you join Lions, you join a global service network. So at the same time you're helping your own community locally, you can also contribute to Lions community efforts in other countries.

The Lions have no paid executives and all members give their time freely.

Fundraising Activities

Since it's formation in 1976, Wroxham & Hoveton Lions Club has been working hard to help those who are less fortunate. To enable us to do this, the Club is very active in undertaking various fundraising activities throughout the year. We are very grateful to the public for their generosity, as without this we would not be able to support the many deserving causes we help.

Charity Shop

We are very fortunate to have our own Charity Shop in the Riverside Precinct, Hoveton, and a substantial part of our income is generated from this source, thanks to the generous donations made by the public of clothes, bric a brac etc. All monies go into our general charity fund. The Shop opens seven days a week during the period June to September (9am to 4.45pm Mon to Sat, 10am to 4pm Sundays) and Monday to Saturdays 9am to 4pm for the rest of the year. We always welcome donations of clean, good quality items and the shop can be contacted on 01603 783737.

Cuddly Toy Tombola

Just round the corner from our shop is our Cuddly Toy Tombola, which operates from May through to the end of September, seven days a week, weather permitting. For an outlay of 25 pence per ticket, you have the chance to win a cuddly dog or teddy, depending on your choice of ticket. At the start of the year, the incoming President selects two charities and the proceeds are split equally between them.

Mobile Tombola

This operates on similar lines to the main tombola, but visits fairs, fetes and other events. A deserving cause to benefit from the proceeds is decided on by the Club.

Craft Fairs

The Club organises four Craft Fairs during the year, which are held at the Broadland Youth & Community Centre. Good quality local handmade crafts and goods are available to purchase and it is the opportunity to find something just a little bit different. The Fairs run between 10am & 4pm on advertised dates. Admission is free and refreshments are available at very reasonable prices. All monies from this event go into our general charity fund.
See our Events page for forthcoming Craft Fairs.

Furniture Sale

This is an extremely popular event, which is now held approximately six times a year, at the Broadland Youth and Community Centre. Again, due to the generosity of the public, we are able to offer a good range of second hand furniture and some electrical goods for sale at very reasonable prices. A delivery service is available, if required, at a small extra cost. All proceeds from the sale go into our general charity fund.
See our Events page for the next Furniture sale

Motor Show & Family Fun Event.

Held in mid August, this is by far and away the largest fundraising event the Club undertakes. When planning the first annual show in 2008, it was decided the show must cater for all the family and this philosophy has continued, so as well as new cars from most of the local dealerships, we have classic cars & motor cycles, craft, trade and charity stalls, children's rides, amusements and competitions, police & fire vehicles, grand prize draw raffle, a good selection of food outlets, a bar and more. The special attractions vary each year, but those at past shows have included: the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car from the film, James Bond cars and the original "Little Nellie" auto gyro, as seen in "You Only Live Twice" and a display by two Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfires. Also, regular visitors have been The Norwich Star Wars Club and The Charity Dalek Squad, who are very popular with the young – and not so young! Half of the proceeds from each show are donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance, with the other half going to a different cause each year. These have included local branches of the Downs Syndrome Association and Motor Neurone Disease Association as well as Help For Heroes. We are very grateful to all the companies, firms and individuals who support the show in one form or another and make the event possible.

The show has its own dedicated web site, NorwichMotorShow where full details can be found.

Santa Sleigh

Since 2005, the sleigh, complete with Father Christmas, has, during each December, been visiting the villages around our area, as well as spending a day outside Roy's Department store in Hoveton and the Tesco store at Stalham. While the main aim is to help raise money for local deserving causes, the real bonus of the sleigh is to see the delight it brings, on the faces of both young and old.
